The salt spray test chamber artificially creates an atomized environment (salt spray) containing sodium chloride (NaCl), so that the salt spray continues to settle on the surface of the sample. The chloride ions in the salt spray will destroy the passivation film (such as oxide layer, coating) on the metal surface, causing electrochemical corrosion (such as rust, coating peeling, substrate corrosion, etc.); for non-metallic materials (such as coatings, plastics), it may cause surface aging, cracking or performance degradation. By controlling the temperature, humidity, salt spray concentration and duration of the test environment, “accelerated corrosion” can be achieved, shortening the corrosion process of several years or even decades in the natural environment to several days or weeks.
